    For Comma 38, artist and publisher Arnaud Desjardin will exhibit new, old, rare, and popular books while running an active printing press in Bloomberg Space. His COMMA commission, part of an ongoing project titled The Book on Books on Artists' Books, is intended to create an active and participatory review of current and historical practice. This exhibition is about both the display of books on artists' books and the production of a book about the books displayed. He intends to print a first edition, a book of books, a critical anthology and source book, alongside which a large range of books on artists' books will be displayed in a series of vitrines.
    Artists' books have normally been sold and distributed through small networks of bookshops and galleries that often produce lists of available titles in printed form. The advent of the Internet has meant that information online has changed the nature of this documentary evidence. Desjardin's unique and extraordinary combination of display and production makes an exhibition that actively engages in both the making and disseminating in real time.   • Morris’ new bookwork, Getting Inside Jack Kerouac’s Head, is a performative retyping of the recently published original scroll edition of Jack Kerouac’s beat classic, On the Road. Morris’ project first appeared as an ongoing journey through the book, read and re-typed on a WordPress blog one page per day. This newly published codex version pours the content of that performative retyping back into the format of the paperback source book. It follows the default logic of a blog archive to put the last post, page at the start and stores the rest of the entries in reverse order. In other words, whereas Kerouac traveled from the East coast to the West coast, Morris crosses America from West to East.

  • Fazal Sheikh made his first trip to the holy Indian city of Vrindavan in 2003. Each year thousands of women make their way there to join the community of widows who spend their days in the temples, worshipping their god Krishna, and preparing for death. Over the next three years, Fazal Sheikh became accepted by the widows, who agreed to sit for their portraits and talked to him about their lives. Their stories revealed how powerless some of the women had been under the strictures of traditional Hindu law. They were victims of enforced marriage, physical violence, sexual abuse and neglect. Some had been evicted from the family home once their children were married. Others had left of their own accord. As Fazal Sheikh discovered, what the women find in Vrindavan is not just religious solace, but in the sisterhood of other widows they find companionship and support. In his portraits their faces are suffused with calm – in some cases they already seem to have reached a half-life, somewhere between this world and the next – and their religious faith, in many ways the source of their past troubles, finally brings them peace.   • This artist’s book is the result of Herbarium Cataplasma, a twofold community art project that Laurence Aëgerter developed at the invitation of the city of Leeuwarden in Friesland, the Netherlands. Aëgerter led a careful reconstruction of the plan of the medicinal garden of the medieval Abbey of Saint Gall on an unused plot of land in Leeuwarden, which was once part of a convent. This project was realized in collaboration with the local residents. Aëgerter also invited the residents for a symbolical healing ritual of destroyed landscapes. She selected 100 images by searching the web for photographs of disasters created by nature and man throughout the world.
    Participants were invited to treat the photographs of destroyed landscapes with the medicinal plants from their newly built garden, with appropriate herbal therapies (e.g. cannabis for anxiety relief or ginger against pain from burns). As the source images were mainly used as news photographs, Aëgerter’s book relates to a newspaper design.

    Peter Phobia is an artist and illustrator currently living in Vienna, Austria. Besides being a passionate golf player, he has an obsession with writing lists, loves bananas and carries his sketchbook everywhere he goes. Furthermore, Peter is a collector of absurd moments of everyday life which later on often serve as a source of inspiration in his work. He has worked with several magazines and brands in Austria and his artwork has been shown in numerous places around the globe, such as in Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Madrid, Switzerland and Mexico.

    Based in a quiet undisclosed studio a short train ride outside of downtown Berlin, artist Peter Aurisch creates some of the most original tattoos in the city — and in a place with an estimated 2,000 tattoo artists, that’s saying something. To keep his ideas fresh and original, he may only begin planning a new piece when the client first arrives. He tends to work freehand without sketches or source imagery, and instead draws inspiration from stories and details provided by his customers. Aurisch’s studio is called Johnny Nevada, he takes only a single appointment daily.

  • Abstract: Die Handlungen, die Bücher immer fordern, zum Beispiel Nehmen oder Weglegen, Aufschlagen oder Seiten-Betrachten, werden bewusst, wenn Künstler wie Sol LeWitt oder Clegg & Guttmann ihre Rezipienten auffordern, mit Büchern wirklich etwas zu tun. Ihre künstlerischen Handlungsanweisungen sind nicht zu verwechseln mit Künstlerbüchern, wo Künstler nicht nur Texte illustrieren, sondern mit den Möglichkeiten, die Bücher bieten, ihre künstlerischen Vorstellungen überhaupt erst entwickeln. – Während Bücher und Bibliotheken heute scheinbar an Bedeutung verlieren, wird das Medium Buch von Künstlern, geradezu umgekehrt proportional, besonders kommentiert. – Die künstlerischen Handlungsanweisungen mit Büchern haben ihren Vorläufer bei Marcel Duchamp, der bei seinem Unhappy Readymade 1917 dazu aufforderte, ein Geometriebuch auf den Balkon zu hängen, so dass der Wind seine Probleme darin finden konnte. Hier ist die Assoziation an das Buch Kohelet richtig – und damit eine Reflexion darüber, was überhaupt getan wird, was wer warum tut, was Bestand hat, was flüchtig ist.
