Dans « Today I wrote nothing » Natalie Czech se réfère à une page du journal de l’écrivain et poète d’avantgarde russe Daniil Charms (1905-1942) auteur de nouvelles très courtes aussi absurdes qu’étranges, dans un style proche du surréalisme et du dadaïsme. Il est rapidement stigmatisé comme auteur « antisoviétique » du fait des multiples interprétations possibles de ses écrits. Il se tourne alors vers l’écriture de livres pour enfants. Il décède en 1942 lors du siège de Leningrad, dans un hôpital psychiatrique où il avait été interné de force par le pouvoir stalinien au motif de son « étrangeté ». Ses manuscrits seront publiés à l’Ouest au cours des années 60 et sous forme de samizdat en U.R.S.S.

The Soviet Union was unique in its formidable and dynamic use of the illustrated book as a means of propaganda. Edgardo Antonio Vigo, graveur sur bois, poète expérimental, constructeur d’«objets inutiles» et de «machines bizarres» fut l’une des figures majeures de la poésie concrète et visuelle sud américaine. Fondé en 1968 par le critique d’art Jorge Glusberg, le “Centro de Arte y Comunicación” (CAYC) fonctionna comme un lieu d’échange international entre artistes et intellectuels. Ce fut une organisation para-institutionnelle, cherchant une place pour l’art argentin dans l’espace latino-américain et sur la scène internationale. Il empruntait ses modes de fonctionnement et sa stratégie à l’avant-garde artistique de la seconde moitié du XX ème siècle.
La première exposition organisée par le CAYC en 1969, fut “Arte y Cibernética“, mais c’est “Arte de Sistemas “ présentée en 1971 au Musée d’Art Moderne de Buenos-Aires qui posera les fondations de son futur développement. Cette exposition où figuraient de nombreux artistes internationaux, circula dans le monde entier en s’appuyant sur un réseau alternatif de centres d’art alors en activité dans les principales capitales d’Europe et d’Amérique.
Malgré ses démêlés avec la junte militaire qui dirigeait l’Argentine, le CAYC organisa de nombreuses manifestations: expositions collectives et personnelles, rencontres internationales d’art vidéo, colloques, congrès et conférences dans le monde entier. Il édita également des livres d’artistes.

Texts by Guy Schraenen, Felipe Ehrenberg and João Fernandes, among others, illustrate all aspects of his artistic and intellectual work. From his early career as a young, successful writer in Mexico to his numerous activities in Amsterdam where he cofounded the independent artists' run space In-Out Center and founded the legendary bookshop-gallery Other Books and So (1975–79), the first of its kind dedicated to artists’ publications.

Kunstverein Milano is pleased to announce Exposition littéraire autour de Mallarmé, Michalis Pichler’s first solo exhibition in Italy (15.12.2016-28.01.2017). Its title recalls an exhibition of the same name by Marcel Broodthaers in 1969 at Wide White Space in Antwerp, Belgium. The exhibition is centered around re-readings and re-writings of Un Coup de Dés jamais n’abolira le Hasard (A Throw of the Dice will never abolish chance) across different media, reproducing that icon of the avant-garde. The exhibition also features the film Une Seconde d’Éternité and a reading room of greatest hits. Michalis Pichler’s Un Coup de Dés jamais n’abolira le Hasard. SCULPTURE is a close copy of the 1914 edition of Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem, but with all the words cut out by laser, in a way that corresponds directly to the typographic layout used by Mallarmé.

This survey of experimental art and design magazines published since 2000 explores the various ways in which contemporary artists and designers utilize the magazine format as an experimental space for the presentation of artworks and text. Throughout the 20th century, international avant-garde activities in the visual arts and design were often codified first in the informal context of a magazine or journal. This exhibition, drawn from the holdings of the MoMA Library, follows the practice into the 21st century. The works on view represent a broad array of international titles within this genre, from community-building newspapers to image-only photography magazines to conceptual design projects. The contents illustrate a diverse range of image-making, editing, design, printing, and distribution practices. There are obvious connections to the past lineage of artists’ magazines and little architecture and design magazines of the 20th century, as well as a clear sense of the application of new techniques of image-editing and printing methods. Assembled together, these contemporary magazines provide a first-hand view into these practices and represents the MoMA Library’s sustained effort to document and collect this medium.
