Christophoros Kyriakides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1949. He was an architecture draughtsman and considered himself an inventor. In 1988 he self-published “Six Continents Stars Compass”, ‘an entertaining and educational’ board game. He considered the game inventive, recreative and formative for all ages and intended its global distribution. The game received no recognition from the public and now only a few copies exist.
In the board game, Kyriakides draws a journey with impossible objects, invented maps, landscapes and anagrammatic poetry with mathematical diagrams. One comes across an abstracted reflection of 80s locality, world politics, obsession with the American dream, an isolated emotional darkness but also a universal landscape. A chance encounter of Marina Xenofontos with this game catalysed a strong fascination that led to the uncovering of his archive. This publication, a part of Xenofontos’ practice-based research, brings to the fore the rich universe of Kyriakides’ personal symbolism that shecreatively harnesses as a means of an alternative, atypical handling and systematisation of themes and issues that she finds affinities with.

Leo-Leander Namislow, born in 1983 in Essen, lives and works as a freelance artist in Essen. Growing up in a rural environment in Rhineland-Palatinate, he started to creatively engage with his surroundings early on. After his training
as a stonemason, Leo worked for an animation company in Frankfurt. When he moved back to Essen in 2007 he eventually started living off his creative output. Since then he has had several solo exhibitions and took part in
many group shows in a variety of institutions such as the Kunstverein Essen-Werden. His works fascinate by opening up new fantastic worlds to the viewer on the one hand and by proving of a large multiplicity of techniques on the other hand. This book gives an insight into a sample, mainly comprised of black and white works, of a much larger, colourful and ever increasing artistic universe.

Ergebnis aus dem Seminar > Schreiben als künstlerische Praxis und Experimentelles Schreiben.
Schreiben als eine künstlerische Praxis hat eine lange Geschichte und kann dabei die unterschiedlichsten Formen annehmen: sie kann als ein Medium der Selbstbefragung dienen, in dem Gedanken geordnet, strukturiert und kontextualisiert werden, oder als ein Übersetzungsprozess, in dem die eigene künstlerische Agenda in Sprache gefasst und mit bestehenden Diskursen in Verbindung gebracht wird; sie kann aber durchaus auch unmittelbar, d.h. performativ-poetisch wirken. In den Lektüre-Einheiten des Seminars werden wir uns auf die Möglichkeiten der diversen Genres konzentrieren und dabei essayistische, poetische, theoretische, akademische, literarische und performative Ansätze untersuchen.
Dabei bietet besonders der verhältnismäßig junge Bereich der „künstlerischen Forschung“ einen interessanten Rahmen, in dem das Verhältnis von künstlerischer Praxis, Theorie und bestehendem Diskurs untersucht – und neue Formen des Schreibens erprobt werden können. Persönliche Erfahrungen, Leerstellen, widerständiges Material oder eine poetische Sprache können dabei ebenso zum Einsatz kommen wie Methoden der etablierten Wissenschaften. Und dies durchaus auch als ein Modus der Kritik: Besonders im Bereich einer queer-feministischen und postkolonialen künstlerischen Forschung werden geltende Überzeugungen des Wissenschaftsbetriebs grundsätzlich infrage gestellt und neue Formen des Schreibens – zwischen Praxis und Theorie – etabliert. (Siehe hierzu z.B. Maggie Nelson, Paul B. Preciado u.a.)
Der zweite Teil des Seminars widmet sich der Schreib-Praxis selbst. In Form von regelmäßigen, gemeinsamen Übungen nähern wir uns dem eigenen Schreiben an und erproben dabei dessen Verhältnis zur jeweiligen künstlerischen Praxis. (Schreibe ich, wie ich zeichne? Oder male und schreibe ich, wie ich denke? Oder wird das Schreiben gebraucht, um die künstlerische Arbeit für Vorträge, Anträge oder Ausstellungstexte in eine allgemeinere Sprache zu übersetzen?) Im Verlauf des Seminars soll ein eigenes, textbasiertes Projekt entwickelt werden. Diese Texte werden wir gemeinsam besprechen, editieren und in einer kleinen Publikation (Zine) am Ende des Semesters herausgeben. Eine Kollaboration mit dem Seminar von Inka Meißner ist dabei geplant.
