A key figure in Mexican conceptual art, Ulises Carrión (1941, San Andrés Tuxtla, Mexico – 1989, Amsterdam) was an artist, editor, curator, and theorist of the post-1960s international artistic avant-garde.
Texts by Guy Schraenen, Felipe Ehrenberg and João Fernandes, among others, illustrate all aspects of his artistic and intellectual work. From his early career as a young, successful writer in Mexico to his numerous activities in Amsterdam where he cofounded the independent artists' run space In-Out Center and founded the legendary bookshop-gallery Other Books and So (1975–79), the first of its kind dedicated to artists’ publications.

This catalogue investigates the notion of “really useful knowledge” and its origins. In the 1820s and 1830s, working class organisations in the UK introduced this phrase to describe a body of knowledge that encompassed various “unpractical” disciplines such as politics, economics and philosophy, as opposed to the “useful knowledge” proclaimed by business owners who had previously begun to invest more heavily in their companies’ progress through financing workers’ education in “applicable” disciplines like engineering, physics, chemistry and mathematics. The publication presents texts and conversations that analyse these themes, including philosophy, art, politics and technology.

The exhibition catalogue of republic brings together a broad selection of works by Juan Luis Moraza that explore the museum as a system of conventions and possibilities of citizenship. Steyerl approaches current themes in her work, for instance the impact the proliferation of images and the use of the Internet and technology have on our lives. She uses these issues as a starting point for developing, not just through her video pieces but also through writing and essays, critical work about control, surveillance and militarisation, migration, cultural globalisation, feminism and political imagery, questions she believes have the capacity to create realities.

... Diese Installationen im Palacio de Cristal finden ihre Entsprechung in der Statue des Gefallenen Engels im Parque del Retiro und in der Bibliothek des Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Mit dieser Verteilung auf verschiedene Räume möchte Weiner einen Rundgang durch die Stadt vorschlagen, so wie ein Blick, der die Worte, aus denen seine Werke bestehen, durchwandert.
In diesem Projekt, das eigens für diesen Anlass geschaffen wurde, nutzt Weiner die Sprache als eine Art öffentlicher Skulptur, indem er neue Räume für die Reflexion über Kunst schafft. Die Bedeutung der verwendeten Wörter, die Grammatik und die Interpunktionszeichen werden mit den Merkmalen der Medien - darunter die Typografie, der Buchstabenkörper, die Farbe und die grafische Gestaltung - verbunden, um die skulpturale Komponente zu bilden.
Gold, Silber, Smaragde, Stahl, Salz oder Diamanten sind einige der Begriffe, die in den Fenstern des Pavillons zu lesen sind. Sie verweisen auf die Materialien und machen somit das Werk aus. Die Sonne dringt durch die auf dem Dach des Gebäudes angebrachten Vinylschablonen, wodurch sich die Worte im Inneren mit der Tageszeit bewegen. So kann das Werk von innen, außen oder durch die Projektion auf den Boden gelesen werden. Auch die Dynamik zwischen Materialität und Immaterialität prägt Weiners Arbeit zu dieser Zeit.
Für die Texte hat der Künstler, wie bei ihm üblich, Englisch und die Sprache, in der die Installation angesiedelt ist, verwendet. Der Titel der Ausstellung, Por sí mismo/Per se, bezieht sich auf die Substanz im Gegensatz zum Zufall. Dieser metaphysische Name deutet auf die Abwesenheit von Manipulationen an der Arbeit hin und betont, dass die verwendeten Materialien nicht metaphorisch, sondern buchstäblich sind ....
