Sharon Gilbert, die ihr Leben lang in Brooklyn lebte und eine gefeierte Künstlerin war, erwarb ihren BFA an der Cooper Union und absolvierte ein Studium am City College of New York. Sie kam zu WSW, um einen Nuklear-Atlas zu erstellen, in dem die Orte nuklearer Aktivitäten und Unfälle ausführlich beschrieben werden. Sharons Bücher und Collagen wurden in bedeutenden Ausstellungen gezeigt, unter anderem im Brooklyn Museum of Art, im Museum of Modern Art und im Georges Pompidou Center in Paris.

Als Performance-Künstler mit Wurzeln in der minimalistischen Bildhauerei und als Konzeptkünstler, der Experimentalfilme und deren Audio-Äquivalent auf Vinyl-Schallplatten herstellte, teilte Goldstein seine Zeit in den 1970er Jahren zwischen Los Angeles und New York auf und wurde schließlich zu einem der Dreh- und Angelpunkte der Pictures Group, die im Herbst 1977 im Artist's Space in New York City ihre erste Anerkennung erfuhr.

On June 21, 2012, precisely one hundred years will have passed since Marcel Duchamp arrived in Munich. He spent three months in the city, three months that were to radically change his art and turn him into one of the most influential artist of modernism. He is regarded as pioneer of conceptual art influencing numerous artists from Sol LeWitt to Ai Weiwei and still today continuously inspires new generations of artists.
On the anniversary of the French artist’s arrival, Munich’s Architecture Museum is presenting Rudolf Herz’s latest art project “Marcel Duchamp – Le mystère de Munich”, in which the artist investigates the background story of his predecessor’s stay in the Bavarian capital. La mostra trova il suo punto di partenza in un nucleo di dipinti del grande maestro Francis Bacon, la cui opera entra in dialogo con il lavoro di cinque artisti internazionali contemporanei (Nathalie Djurberg, Adrian Ghenie, Arcangelo Sassolino, Chiharu Shiota, Annegret Soltau) che condividono l’interesse di Bacon nella riflessione sulla condizione esistenziale dell’uomo e la rappresentazione della figura umana.

The New Art Practice was a term created for a generation of artists in the former Yugoslavia active in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. These artists shifted their practice to spaces outside the traditional studio, onto city streets, into artist-run spaces, and in multimedia performances and experimental publications. Focusing on artists working in the city of Zagreb, this exhibition documents aspects of this shift and highlights the ability of artists' publications to record these often ephemeral gestures and ideas. While artists such as Goran Trbuljak, Braco Dimitrijević, Sanja Iveković, Mladen Stilinović, and Vlado Martek, among others, worked in a variety of mediums, they shared a common impulse to produce publications. These artists questioned and played with ideas about the place of an artist within this particular political and socioeconomic context. Their work often involved public participation and blurred traditional notions of authorship through collective activities, chance operations, and the appropriation of language and imagery from the state and commercial media. The materials in this installation resonate with other contemporaneous scenes in Eastern and Central Europe and with broader international trends, while also providing an insight into very local networks of experimental artists and writers in Zagreb. All materials are drawn from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art Library.

Speech Karaoke – as the name suggests – works in a similar way as a traditional karaoke. Instead of choosing between songs from a booklet, the user chooses between speeches. Within a relaxed atmosphere one can listen to speeches delivered by other karaoke bar guests – or try out how it feels to interpret someone´s speech.
Speech Karaoke is a constantly expanding project by The Speech Karaoke Action Group. When the Speech Karaoke-project arrives to a new city, local speeches are added to the Karaoke archive.
The project was created in Finland, the promised land of karaoke bars.
Karaoke - gesprochen, nicht gesungen!
Speech Karaoke - wie der Name schon sagt - funktioniert ähnlich wie eine traditionelle Karaoke. Anstatt zwischen Liedern aus einem Booklet zu wählen, wählt der Benutzer zwischen Reden. In entspannter Atmosphäre kann man sich die Reden anderer Karaoke-Bar-Gäste anhören - oder ausprobieren, wie es sich anfühlt, die Rede eines anderen zu interpretieren.
Speech Karaoke ist ein ständig wachsendes Projekt von The Speech Karaoke Action Group. Wenn das Speech Karaoke-Projekt in einer neuen Stadt ankommt, werden die dortigen Reden dem Karaoke-Archiv hinzugefügt.

Edition 09 in the ongoing Artist Music Journals series features the work of the Montreal based artists and musicians Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau, known as Seripop. Known for their original illustration and design work, as well as their longstanding tenure as founders and members of the musical outfit Aids Wolf, Seripop have a broad following around the globe. For their AMJ, Seripop compiled years of original gig poster work, the first collection of its kind for the studio, which has made thousands of prints over the years.
About Seripop: Yannick Desranleau and Chloe Lum are visual artists and musicians who started collaborating in 2002 under the nom de guerre Seripop. Based in Montreal, Seripop has earned international attention for its stylistically distinct, silkscreened street posters. In 2005, Lum and Desranleau began experimenting with sculptural print installations which merge notions of city politics and visual perception. The duo has been speaking and exhibiting their work at various art institutions including Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England, Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen, Scotland, and the University of North Texas, Denton, USA. In addition to Seripop, Lum and Desranleau play in AIDS Wolf, a noise-rock band and Hamborghinni, a drums and electronics project.

Following the example of French and British railway companies, C.P. (Portuguese Railways) built houses and social facilities between 1910-20, to support its employees and their families. Key projects implemented during the first quarter of the twentieth century included the Boneca neighbourhood, for retired railway workers, and the Vila Verde neighbourhood, in the alignment of the Bairro Camões neighbourhood. The latter was built in 1926 designed by Cottinelli Telmo and Luís da Cunha. All these neighbourhoods are located in the city of Entroncamento. The city itself was created because of the railways. The station was the first dwelling - at the time a small tent (1862). This new venture provoked major migration from the interior of Portugal, of those who wanted to work for the Company. As a consequence, C.P. (Portuguese Railways) developed a plan, involving a series of ambitious social support structures, perhaps unique at the national level. The company built neighbourhoods for employees, a school, a supplies warehouse, an anti-tuberculosis dispensary that operated as a health centre and also encouraged the development of sporting activities. In parallel with technological evolution and development of railway activities, the workshop area was expanded, included reinforced staff training, which reached a peak when a training centre was built, that is today called FERNAVE, house in a huge building, built from scratch for these functions and which formerly housed the Instituto Superior de Transportes (Higher Transport Institute).

In the wake of the worldwide glorification of Barcelona via the 1992 Olympics Games, a group of publishers felt that it was time to revive the creative and critical spirit at a cultural level, in the form of a magazine, in order to demonstrate the prevailing level of creativity - via manifestos and works without intermediaries. As a result, Vicenc Altaió, Claret Serrahima, Manel Guerrero, Joaquim Pibernat and Manel Sala launched the magazine, Cave Canis, (which literally means "beware of the dogs") in Barcelona, in 1996.
Starting with its first edition the magazine announced that it would have a short-lived existence - only 9 issues were published, each corresponding to one letter of the publication’s name. The magazine was constituted by a cardboard box, designed by Claret Serrahima, a manifesto, an artist’s book and sometimes contained CDs with recordings and other artistic objects, all associated with the same monographic topic. Each issue had a letter on the front cover designed by an artist. Cave Canis wasn’t available in the usual retail outlets. Each issue was presented in an unusual place in the city, where the manifesto was read, copies were distributed and the magazine then disappeared from sight. The last issue was published in 1999.

OFF-Biennale Budapest is a civil initiative, whose aim is to bring a segment of culture, contemporary art, closer to the public at large. OFF proclaims the importance of independent thinking and action, breaking away from clichés and habitual routines. It is meant to demonstrate that contemporary art can foster and catalyse this kind of activity – in other words, that contemporary art is much more than mere luxury and a source of aesthetic pleasure.

A newspaper was distributed at selected points during the Kunst Fest in the city of Weimar. Both in newspaper stores and on the street by various performers.
It contained propositions for small interventions in public space in Weimar. These propositions function as a written proposal: in relation to Lawrence Weiner's “Declaration of Intent“ the interventions do not need to be executed but can be read as a manual and performed by anybody. Each format is equal. Every written intervention is formulated in a more or less abstract way opening the possibilities of interpretation for the viewer. Poetic connotation is intended.

Fazal Sheikh made his first trip to the holy Indian city of Vrindavan in 2003. Each year thousands of women make their way there to join the community of widows who spend their days in the temples, worshipping their god Krishna, and preparing for death. Over the next three years, Fazal Sheikh became accepted by the widows, who agreed to sit for their portraits and talked to him about their lives. Their stories revealed how powerless some of the women had been under the strictures of traditional Hindu law. They were victims of enforced marriage, physical violence, sexual abuse and neglect. Some had been evicted from the family home once their children were married. Others had left of their own accord. As Fazal Sheikh discovered, what the women find in Vrindavan is not just religious solace, but in the sisterhood of other widows they find companionship and support. In his portraits their faces are suffused with calm – in some cases they already seem to have reached a half-life, somewhere between this world and the next – and their religious faith, in many ways the source of their past troubles, finally brings them peace. Christo & Jeanne-Claude komplettierten am 12.02.2005 im New Yorker Central Park ihr monumentales Projekt The Gates: 7.500 leuchtend safranfarbene Tore auf 37 km Parkwegen. Freihängende Gewebebahnen in jedem Tor wehten bei leichtem Wind bis an das nächstliegende Tor. Das monumentale Vorhaben wurde erstmals 1979 konzipiert, finanziert wurden The Gates allein vom Künstlerpaar selbst und deren C.V.J. Corporation. Das Kunstwerk war zeitlich begrenzt: 16 Tage lang waren die 7.500 Tore im Central Park für jedermann zu sehen, danach wurde die Installation wieder abgebaut und alle Materialien wurden recycelt.

"Das neue Künstlerbuch von Paul McCarthy (*1945 in Salt Lake City) stellt ein Hauptwerk vor, das gleichermaßen auf den realen wie mythisch besetzten Ort künstlerischen Schaffens verweist: The Box (1999) ist McCarthys Atelier, eine vom Künstler ins Schwerelose und Groteske gekippte Alltagswelt. In the context of a continuous and persistent spiritual quest in the field of Greek art and its history, the artist Christos Bokoros appears —through simple themes and earthy, warm materials— to win an important battle. He has silently found a subtle and significant way of stripping bare certain symbols—his own ‘signs’: a way of isolating those symbols from anything unnecessary and superfluous, and of drawing the community’s attention to them by revealing them to be purified, resurrectional and full of fire.
Through the presentation of a series of paintings entitled ‘ODOS ELEFTHERIAS’, Bokoros ventures a direct discourse of these ‘signs’ with buildings and streets that are adjacent to, or end up at, Lefkosia’s Green Line. Many of these buildings have suffered damages and decay. One could say that in their own way they constitute a second crevice near the Green Line that divides the state. It is in these fissures that the artist sets up - plants - his ‘ODOS ELEFTHERIAS’, in the hope of giving the city’s centre new fruits and joyous vibrations—in a silent and honest alliance with all the indigenous revitalizing forces

Die Idee des Pavillons „in between water - 두물마을“ ist es, konventionelle Ansätze der Kunstproduktion und ihrer Präsentationsformen zu überdenken. Da Kunst als dynamischer Austausch verstanden wird, der durch kontinuierliche Transformation und Interaktion gekennzeichnet ist, liegt der Schwerpunkt auf den kollaborativen und kommunikativen Prozessen des Schaffens im weiteren Sinne. Durch die Schaffung eines gemeinsamen Raumes durch die Einladung von Gastkünstlern und die Zusammenarbeit mit der lokalen Kunstszene in Gwangju initiiert das Longega-Projekt (Fabian Feichter, Youlee Ku, Siyoung Kim, Nele Ka und Oliver Haussmann) im Deutschen Pavillon einen transnationalen Dialog. Durch künstlerische Forschung und ästhetisches Denken werden Formen politischer und sozialer Verantwortung ausgelotet, Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Alltag verwischt und soziale wie erkenntnistheoretische Potenziale der Kunst genutzt. Kollaboration und Austausch spielen dabei eine entscheidende Rolle, denn künstlerische Praxis ist keine isolierte Tätigkeit, sondern in soziale und kommunikative Netzwerke eingebettet. Das Verständnis von Kunst als Prozess rückt den Wert des Experimentierens und Erforschens, des Unbekannten und des Unfertigen in den Vordergrund. Die Gwangju-Biennale mit ihrem Thema „Pansori - Eine Klanglandschaft des 21. Jahrhunderts“ bietet einen geeigneten Rahmen, um einen solchen Raum der Erkundung zu schaffen.
