„Am 26.11.1969 wurden in Antwerpen von diesem Bild 10 Exemplare, die von I bis X nummeriert sind, auf anodisierendes Aluminium, und 90 von 1 bis 90 nummerierte Exemplare auf durchsichtiges mechanographisches Papier gedruckt. Dies alles bildet eine Originalauflage. Das Modell für dieses annähernde Bild ist die Originalauflage des Gedichtes „Ein Würfel kann den Zufall nicht abschaffen“ von Stéphanie Mallarmé, herausgegeben 1914 vom Verlag Gallimard.
Die auf durchsichtiges Papier gedruckten Exemplare sind mit zwei auf Seitengröße zugeschnittenen Karton ausgestattet, die es dem Leser ermöglichen, nach Belieben eine oder zwei Seiten von den anderen abzusondern. Neben der Originalauflage ist ein „Katalog-Auflage“ von 300 Exemplaren auf durchsichtigem Papier erschienen.

Als Performance-Künstler mit Wurzeln in der minimalistischen Bildhauerei und als Konzeptkünstler, der Experimentalfilme und deren Audio-Äquivalent auf Vinyl-Schallplatten herstellte, teilte Goldstein seine Zeit in den 1970er Jahren zwischen Los Angeles und New York auf und wurde schließlich zu einem der Dreh- und Angelpunkte der Pictures Group, die im Herbst 1977 im Artist's Space in New York City ihre erste Anerkennung erfuhr.
Goldstein mag für einen bestimmten konzeptuellen/gegenständlichen Ansatz in der Bildgestaltung in Erinnerung bleiben, der eine ganze Generation von Künstlern und darüber hinaus geprägt hat, auch wenn sie sich seiner vielleicht gar nicht bewusst sind.

First this was was a series of ephemeral situations in public space in New York 2002–2003. They become comprehensible through the publication of a book. The New York Garbage Flag Profile presents Berlin-based artist Michalis Pichler’s six month long project in which he collected and documented discarded paper cups, plastic bags, pizza boxes, newspapers and other mass-produced materials emblazoned with the American Flag.
Photographed in the public waste baskets, gutters and snow drifts of New York where he found them, the individual items are catalogued on a facing page with uniformly formatted information about their location, the date of their collection, number of flags depicted, number of stars, number of stripes, etc. Each record also includes a full transcription of the text found on the item. The nearly three hundred color photographs in the book are organized into forensic pairs showing the collection site before and after the artist’s intervention. This clinical presentation however belies the artist’s gentle, almost reverent approach to his material-garbage, after all. (Rachel Bers)

1971 veröffentlichte der brasilianische Künstler Antonio Dias (1944-2018) im Selbstverlag Record: The Space Between, ein Vinyl-LP-Audio-Projekt. Auf Seite A mit dem Titel "The Theory of Counting" (Theorie des Zählens) ist ein tickender Wecker zu hören; auf Seite B mit dem Titel "The Theory of Density" (Theorie der Dichte) ist eine Aufnahme des Künstlers zu hören, wie er zwischen den Intervallen der Stille Luft ein- und ausatmet, wodurch ein transfixierendes Kontinuum entsteht. Die LP - Dias' einziges klangbasiertes Werk - ist eine Meditation über die Idee eines durch Zeit und Klang konstruierten Raums. Das Album erlangte internationalen Einfluss und wurde in wichtige Studien über die Schallplatte als Medium aufgenommen, dennoch wird es aufgrund seiner begrenzten Verfügbarkeit häufiger erwähnt als tatsächlich gehört.

Sowohl das Cover als auch die LP selbst waren unkonventionell: Anstelle der traditionellen Papphülle wurde die Platte in einen gepolsterten Versandumschlag aus braunem Papier gesteckt, auf den Dias ein Foto und einen gummierten Titel aufklebte - eine Geste in Richtung Mail Art, die zu dieser Zeit als eigenständiges Medium aufblühte. ...
Die ursprüngliche LP entstand während Dias' kurzem Aufenthalt in London, bevor der Künstler - der in Mailand lebte, wo die Aufnahmen stattfanden - für ein Guggenheim-Stipendium nach New York zog. Dies war die Zeit seiner intensivsten künstlerischen Experimente, in der er seine Praxis - die zuvor auf Malerei und Skulptur beschränkt war, für die er bekannt war - auf audiovisuelle Medien und Technologien wie Super-8-Filme, Video, In-situ-Installationen und Künstlerbücher ausweitete. ...
Die Idee zu Record: The Space Between", so der Künstler, "entstand während des Wartens auf die Geburt meiner Tochter. Aus dem Zimmer neben dem Zimmer, in dem meine Frau in den Wehen lag, konnte ich zwei sich abwechselnde Geräusche hören: ihr Atmen und das Ticken einer Uhr. Ich stellte mir vor, wie ich diese Situation darstellen könnte, und das konnte nur durch die Aufnahme einer LP geschehen". For Comma 38, artist and publisher Arnaud Desjardin will exhibit new, old, rare, and popular books while running an active printing press in Bloomberg Space. His COMMA commission, part of an ongoing project titled The Book on Books on Artists' Books, is intended to create an active and participatory review of current and historical practice. This exhibition is about both the display of books on artists' books and the production of a book about the books displayed. He intends to print a first edition, a book of books, a critical anthology and source book, alongside which a large range of books on artists' books will be displayed in a series of vitrines.
Artists' books have normally been sold and distributed through small networks of bookshops and galleries that often produce lists of available titles in printed form. The advent of the Internet has meant that information online has changed the nature of this documentary evidence. Desjardin's unique and extraordinary combination of display and production makes an exhibition that actively engages in both the making and disseminating in real time. The books themselves become both vehicles for information and documents that testify for artistic activity in its own right

MAK DESIGN SPACE
Die Melange aus Kaffee und Milch ist eine Wiener Erfindung, das Kaffeehaus lieferte neue Variationen und den weltweiten Export. Der Zeitungshalter ist das Relikt einer kostengünstigen Allgemeinbildung und Zugang zur Welt - lange vor Fernsehen und Internet. Am Kaffeehaustisch wurde Literatur, Musik und Politik gemacht, gespielt und gehandelt, als das multifunktionale Möbel noch nicht existierte. Als Ort bietet das Kaffeehaus Reisenden und Getriebenen gleichermaßen ein Zuhause. Ausstattung und Besucher des Kaffeehauses geben Auskunft über lokale Moden und Stile oder mixen diese als globale Trends von morgen.
Eine Work-in-Progress-Ausstellung eröffnet das Forschungsprojekt mit Aspekten zum Wiener Kaffeehaus. Julia Landsiedl (www.jeplus.at), MAK Designer-in-Residence 2011, beobachtet und interviewt die Kaffeehausszene, sammelt Anschauungsbeispiele und durchforstet die MAK-Sammlung nach Artefakten. Eine kognitiv erstellte und kommentierte Collage, eine Art dreidimensionale Mind-Map aus historischen und aktuellen Zeichnungen, Plakaten, Fotografien und Objekten zur Kaffeehauskultur, bietet ein erstes Screening der Thematik und steckt mögliche Forschungsfragen und Gestaltungsaufgaben ab. Sie dient den von Gregor Eichinger konzipierten, parallel stattfindenden Labormodulen als Impuls und Recherche-Kit und wird im Laufe des Projekts durch diese ergänzt. Zudem fungiert sie als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Explorationen im MAK und im Stadtraum

´Lightears´ is the long awaited debut album by Berlin duo Leo Mars. After a year of trial and error, a lot of sessions, sound collecting and analysation of possibilities a precisely crafted, yet astonishingly free floating album came to life. In times of almost infinite sounds, instruments and styles it took the duo some time to come up with the basic material, form a language and then of course learn to speak it. Hours were spent in the studio and their favourite lebanese restaurant discussing the world of sound.
´Lightears´ intelligently smudges the borders between a classic drone, an underground noise, a playful improvisation and an old fashion musique concrete record. All the genres fall into place rather unpretentious with pure sound excitingly assembled to challenge ones listening habits.
It is a rather harsh production always bouncing back and forth between digital, crisp electronics and field recordings pushed way over the edge.
With minimal gear and set up Leo Mars managed to manoveur themselves somewhere inbetween a bedroom thrashing noise keyboard project and a theoratical paper score composer duo. Performing in a trance - allowing things to happen - awaken - making a conscious decision - slipping back into space

This survey of experimental art and design magazines published since 2000 explores the various ways in which contemporary artists and designers utilize the magazine format as an experimental space for the presentation of artworks and text. Throughout the 20th century, international avant-garde activities in the visual arts and design were often codified first in the informal context of a magazine or journal. This exhibition, drawn from the holdings of the MoMA Library, follows the practice into the 21st century. The works on view represent a broad array of international titles within this genre, from community-building newspapers to image-only photography magazines to conceptual design projects. The contents illustrate a diverse range of image-making, editing, design, printing, and distribution practices. There are obvious connections to the past lineage of artists’ magazines and little architecture and design magazines of the 20th century, as well as a clear sense of the application of new techniques of image-editing and printing methods. Assembled together, these contemporary magazines provide a first-hand view into these practices and represents the MoMA Library’s sustained effort to document and collect this medium.

Victor Boullet’s title refers to the Greek god Kronos, a deity known for its doublesidedness, a concept closely connected to his project The Institute of Social Hypocrisy. The origin of this work of self-fiction can be found in one of São Trindade’s sketchbooks, this one entirely devoted to the subject of loss or decadence. With references to the aesthetics of crime scenes and nightlife photographed by Weegee in New York in the 1930 and 1940’s, the device is simple: in a "real décor," São Trindade’s body, abandonned and unconscious, is photographed. The body is always the same but differently ‘prepared’ and ‘composed’ with new dresses, new gestures, new signs of a recent activity or a different personality. Each image has its particular story and each space is a sounding board for each of these performative states of body.

Jacob invites us into an intimate space that serves as a shelter for a nomadic subject, the pilgrim. Free of any territorial attachment, this figure sets out on a devotional journey, motivated by the desire to seek the sacred. Thus, the pilgrim wanders into inhospitable lands, submitting himself to absolute isolation. A solitary exodus towards uncertainty, far away from the worldly, from society, and in a way, from the self. This figure of the pilgrim becomes the leitmotiv of Jacob’s work - its isolation, loss of identity, but also, its vitality. Concepts which she also invokes in her intuitive drawings, that are aesthetically close to Art Brut. "The Room of the Pilgrim" explores the liberty and emancipation that arises from this retreat. In that way, the abandoned refuge built by Jacob speaks of lost rights. The rights to anonymity and intimacy being some of the most recently expropriated and commodified values.

"Gasworks Yaoi" is the first solo exhibition by Spanish artist Francesc Ruiz in London. The show is the culmination of Ruiz's research in the local area, conducted during his residency at Gasworks. Inspired by the longstanding gay establishments in Vauxhall, the artist has created a semi-fictional narrative that overemphasises the clichés around sexuality and lifestyle in the area.
For "Gasworks Yaoi", Ruiz will transform the front of the gallery into a bookshop specialising in yaoi comic books. Originating in Japan, this genre (translated as 'boys love') depicts male homoerotic narratives. However, unlike male-oriented gay erotica, yaoi comic books are both produced and consumed by women.
The yaoi comics, featured in Ruiz's bookshop at Gasworks are allegedly produced by female amateur illustrators who portray the encounters of a group of men whose nightlives revolve around Vauxhall's sprawling gay club and bar scene. By adopting the yaoi comic format and resorting to female authorship, Ruiz distances himself from the stories and characters he depicts, allowing for the imagination to run wild, indulging in stereotypes and idealised situations. Through the comics' humour and distortion of reality Ruiz gives himself license to explore a specific subculture and the way it sits within the wider fabric of the neighbourhood.
Turned into a specialised comic bookshop for women, Gasworks' space becomes an environment where sexuality, local context and its social dynamics are fictionalised and packaged into a product for consumption.

The exhibition CONCRETE UTOPIAS provides a space for artistic works that explore the area of potentiality between not-yet-realised and but-possible. Der Realismus Club wurde 2014 als Plattform für zeitgenössische Kunstproduktion in Berlin gegründet, mit dem Ziel, vor allem jüngere künstlerische Entwicklungen in der zeitgenössischen bildenden Kunst zu fördern und einem breiten Publikum zu präsentieren.
Als eine private Organisation ist unser Ziel, die unabhängige Organisation von zwei Ausstellungen pro Jahr an wechselnden Orten in Berlin. Wir wollen Künstlern nicht nur ein Forum bieten, um ihre Werke auszustellen, sondern auch durch die Bereitstellung eines Budgets die Produktion von neuen Werken unterstützen. Der Realismus Club sieht sich selbst als einen Ort des Experimentierens mit Organisationsmodellen und als Möglichkeit neue Kollaborationspraktiken auszuprobieren. Letztendlich zielt das Format des Realismus Clubs darauf ab, eine konkrete Utopie in sich selbst zu sein.

I wanted to show how cars appear in typical street view, which is rarely the subject of photographs. Cars are usually avoided in photography - one waits until a car has exited a view. The ordinary presence of cars is rarely worthy of representation. It's always the special car, or the extreme traffic jam or, of course, the exciting crash that is being pictured. The Cars pays tribute to the shapes and forms we look at every day. How much time we spend with them, sitting inside them, the endless hours we stare at a dashboard. Even if we don't own a car ourselves, their presence is unavoidable. Cars are everywhere. Their sheer number is the most crazy thing about them. They appear in our lives with excessive omnipresence. In their volume cars intrude upon public space, and the way they occupy streets and open areas is rarely challenged.

In ihrer Masse dringen Autos in den öffentlichen Raum ein, und die Art und Weise, wie sie Straßen und Freiflächen besetzen, wird selten in Frage gestellt.

Per Kirkeby and Lawrence Weiner have known each other for many years. The idea of making a collaborative work and an exhibition together already evolved in the mid eighties, but due to practical reasons the project was not realized back then. Last year during the fall, the idea returned to us in a new form, and we decided together with the artists that now was the time to make it happen. Per Kirkeby shows two brick works built directly within the gallery space. One work is a tall stele with a deep niche, a black line or a "metaphysical shadow" running vertically through it. The other piece is a monumental quadrangular block, an open/closed building or, if you will, a hollow slightly rotten tree. This new installation is made in collaboration with Lawrence Weiner, who has contributed with texts across the inner and outer brick walls, so that words, matter and space overlap and transform the whole. Lawrence Weiner is also showing two other textbased sculptures made site specifically for the gallery space.

DIY is a timeline of the history of the space occupied by W139. In the form of reportage, replete with interviews, maps, and images from the archive, it takes as its starting point the renovation of the gallery space that was proposed in 2003 and from there reflects on the architecture of the building itself and its changing role within the city of Amsterdam over the years. DIY takes the ostensible form of a calendar and in its design and production embodies the do-it-yourself ethos that is so characteristic of W139. A fold-out map shows where a series of art objects were buried during a performance held before the previous renovation, in 1991.

A newspaper was distributed at selected points during the Kunst Fest in the city of Weimar. Both in newspaper stores and on the street by various performers.
It contained propositions for small interventions in public space in Weimar. These propositions function as a written proposal: in relation to Lawrence Weiner's “Declaration of Intent“ the interventions do not need to be executed but can be read as a manual and performed by anybody. Each format is equal. Every written intervention is formulated in a more or less abstract way opening the possibilities of interpretation for the viewer. Poetic connotation is intended.

CURRENT RESIDENT, a collaborative book by Kenny Komer and Marysia Gacek, comprises solely of computer generated imagery inspired by interior design catalogues and magazines. Based on interiors seen in Architectural Digest and Ikea catalogues, the book depicts a fictional, contemporary residence mimicking current tendencies to replace photography with 3D modeling computer software producing photo realistic images. Views of the apartment are generated via computer algorithms with the same techniques used in the advertising industry. Kenny Komer (b.1984) is an interdisciplinary multimedia artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received a BFA from the School of Art, Cooper Union, New York, NY in 2006. He has exhibited at galleries in New York (Gavin Brown's enterprise, Rush Arts Gallery, Carriage House Center and White Box Gallery) and Tokyo, Japan (Motus Fort). Komer is a founding member of the guerrilla street-art collective, Concerned New Yorkers, whose work has been featured in the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Brooklyn Rail, the Village Voice, CNN, and the Daily Telegraph.
